I don't know the max, so I'll just tell you what I am using and like. For flash, the SanDisk Cruzer Fit 32GB Flash Drive - SDCZ33-032G-B35 works quite nicely and it is really small. I have not connected any SATA drives because the USB port doesn't supply enough power for them and I don't want to hassle with an external power supply.
