live radio server

What are the recommended methods to stream live radio on roku? Shoutcast/wowza? I tried both, didn't work for me...

Re: live radio server

Shoutcast definitely works, you have to make sure you are streaming mp3s though, not AAC. It would be nice to know if there is some other method for streaming live mp3s than shoutcast though, anybody know?

I've used icecast too (which is really still the shoutcast protocol, just re-done with open source server components). Still requires a mp3 codec.

Re: live radio server

For a shoutcast server to be listed in the yellow pages (as a public server), the mp3 codec is something like $5, and then you need to get an auth/hash key from DrO here:
http://forums.winamp.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86

And then the server needs to have a manually specified StreamID #1 that the documentation said was optional.

Then it works fine.

If you don't care about being listed in the yellow pages, you can run it as a private server without the streamID or AuthHashKey. And the mp3 license is only needed if you want to use it through Roku.

Re: live radio server

Thanks for the replies! I am actually trying to re-broadcast existing shoutcast radio streams through my Roku channel.

An example would be http://208.93.223.232:8000 (server is public/shoutcast and uses MP3). This method has failed on me and still not able to figure out the problem here.

Re: live radio server

be sure you're adding a trailing slash to URLs like that...

Re: live radio server

I don't know if anyone noticed, last week a channel showed up in the channel store for a few hours and then vanished, Pride 99.1 Radio or something, streaming electronic music. It was clearly unfinished in terms of the Graphics, but, the damn thing started up and streamed INSTANTLY. I'm assuming they are not using Shoutcast, because Shoutcast almost never starts instantly on Roku, so I think there must be some other way to stream live .mp3 audio I don't know about - or perhaps it is possible to use HLS to stream audio only? Has anyone experimented with this?
