From what I've read, CTRL-C should be the combination you're looking for on the Mac. There are quite a few results on Google about it not working for users, because they had the keyboard mapped differently. Go to System Preferences->Keyboard->Modifier Keys and make sure the "Control" key is mapped to "^ Control". Let us know if that works.

Weird according to the 4.12 of the link I sent previously sounds like it works without any app running. Guess I need to use a dev channel app.

I have the same problems both in Mac OS X 10.9 and Ubuntu 12.04:
Pressing Ctrl+C does not enter to debug mode. My Roku version is 5.3.

Connected to 192.168.1.117.
Escape character is '^]'.
^C^C^C^C^C

Don't forget though: this only works on a side-loaded/dev channel - you don't get to interrupt/debug published channels.
You can only interrupt development channel with ^C. There is no console in external channels or main menu.
