Is there another way to retrieve Channel App ID's?
I get that I can run http://<myIPaddress:8060/query/apps but is there a way to retrieve the ID of channel without having to install the channel on my Roku?

you can find your channel id from the Address bar if you log onto owner.roku.com and view your channel's properties.

A lot of people don't want their private channels made public...

That's right. Private channels are usually private for a reason. And keep in mind this nugget from the developer agreement: http://wwwimg.roku.com/static/sdk/legal ... eement.pdf
Developer may not use the SDK to (i) enable the installation of third party channel applications, or
(ii) to create Developer’s own version of a Channel Store
