How to do subtitles/captions with video via HLS?

Hello all,

I am having no problems streaming our MP4s (encoded at H.264+AAC) via HLS to our Roku channel.

I'd like to start including CAPTIONS (subtitles) with the videos.

Can someone please give me a website/link that will help me get started on this? I'm assuming that there are two ways to accomplish this:

1) Embed the captions in the MP4 file itself. If it's "baked" into the video, then I'm assuming the captions will still work if the MP4 file is downloaded to (for example) an iPod or iPhone, or iPad, Android, etc.?

2) Provide the subtitles in a separate external file that is streamed with the video via HLS somehow. No idea how this would work.

We use Wowza as our back-end to serve up the videos by the way.

Thank you for your help!

Steven
