BIF archive format Open Source or proprietary to Roku?

Is the BIF (Base Index Frames) file archive format created and owned by Roku or an Open Source standard? What is the license for the BIF format?

It is not an official standard, but created by Roku and shared with the Roku community. The specification is included in the SDK. See the "BIFFileSpecification.pdf" document.

Thanks Kevin, are we allowed to use this file format on a non Roku project?

That should be fine. Many other media players have similar functionality...
