remote volume controls occasionally work

So, I have 2 roku streaming stick+ models, 3810CA. 

Each one has 2 problems.

1. The volume controls work inconsistently.

2. The remotes just eat batteries. 

I never have a problem with the power control but the volumes buttons work maybe once a day, and then stop working. And, I am regularly changing the batteries, like maybe twice a month. Far more than any other remote in my house. 

I've already gone through the roku support page on the volume buttons. Didn't notice any change. 

How can both units be so broken out of the box?

    We understand you're having a problem with the Roku remote. We're happy to help you. Please try these steps below:

    1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
    2. Scroll and select Settings.
    3. Select Remotes & Devices.
    4. Select Remote.
    5. Choose your voice remote from the list and select Set up remote for TV control.
    6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
