this seems to be common issue. I've had the Roku for only about a year. Wondering if I should order a third party remote instead of the Roku one, which according to the multitude of posts clearly has this issue as a common problem. I may take mine apart and check the ground wire, as I read in a previous post.
as a former Battery Quality Assurance Engineer who used to work in the NEC laptop division, this seems like a serious common flaw in Roku Remotes.
I see no resolution. The reset procedures do not work. Re-powering the Roku device also doesn't work.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
You can get 3rd party replacement remotes on Amazon, has anyone tried them?

- Won't charge
- Only powers on when plugged into an outlet
- Doesn't turn on or work
- Not holding a charge (e.g., loses charge quickly)
- Test with different power outlets, micro USB cables, and chargers.
- Reset your remote: Press and hold the Back/pairing button and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds.

Re: Roku Rechargeable remote not working unless plugged in
I read an earlier post where the person took the remote apart using plastic pry tools, and found a ground wire had come loose. So I did the same. Sure enough, a black ground wire that goes to what appears to be the rechargeable battery was broken free. I was able to re-solder it and the remote works fine.
Given the number of complaints regarding this issue, I'm guessing there is a quality problem either in the design or manufacturing process. (Keep in mind I used to test and repair Notebook Computers for NEC)
I was able to fix it, but as a backup, I ordered a 3rd party replacement remote - as I also have a Roku Ultra upstairs, I'm guessing I'll need to re-solder that one at some point too.
Note to other users, if your remote goes dead in this way, you can download the Roku Remote Control app for your iOS or Android device and use it until you can get a new remote or re-solder the loose wire.
Note that it is a tight soldering job - not for the inexperienced.
There are some great third party replacement remotes on Amazon dirt cheap - I recommend having one as a backup. I wouldn't buy another ROKU brand remote unless I was assured that their quality assurance problem has been addressed.

Re: Roku Rechargeable remote not working unless plugged in
I'm having the same issue, remote works fine when plugged in, immediately stops working once unplugged. Is there a solution? Reboots did not resolve.
