It seems that Roku interferes with “mute” or “channel changing” during ads.
I don’t watch commercials or listen to them (heresy, I know). However, when a commercial comes on, both muting and channel changing take more than a couple of button presses to work. This doesn’t happen during a show and it doesn’t happen when I use another streaming service. Is this common?
What happens if you press the mute on the TV or AVR remote? It doesn't seem like a Roku could interfere with that button press.
That started happening with my Roku also in the past few days. Yes, I can drag out the tv remote that I need for no other purpose, but it's annoying and imo a violation of my right to peace and quiet. It only serves to make me even less likely to buy anything being advertised.
I forgot to mention that it not only affects muting. Even volume control and the power button eventually became nonfunctional until I turned the tv off and on again. I almost bought a new remote before I realized that wasn't the problem.
I experienced the same unbelievable behavior today from my Roku device. If that's what Roku needs to make money from their advertisers, then shame on them. Those buttons are for my private use. They are never ever to be overridden by a third party. Ever! Bye bye Roku channels. There's plenty of other streaming channels to watch that don't violate my choice of what I listen to and the volume I choose during commercials.
I am pleased to report that my remote stopped doing this as mysteriously as it started. I'm beginning to wonder if my new TV that had something to do with it, although it didn't start doing it right away. But I'm still not really not sure what made it start or stop. I hope your issue vanishes as well, and soon, because Roku doesn't seem to help with much.
