I have a streaming stick 4k and I lost the original RC790 voice remote. So I purchased the simpler remote model RC82.
Everything works fine until the sticks connects to the wireless network: the remote stops working then. I can only control the device with the iOS app but the remote does nothing.
if I restart the stick it works again until the stick connects to the wifi. The batteries in the remote are new and 100% according to the Roku.
i just applied the software update and still the same
That’s rather annoying. How do I fix?
Hi, @Manokig
Thanks for posting, and welcome to the Roku Community.
We understand that you are having issues with your Roku remote not working with your Roku device, and we're here to provide you with information regarding your concern.
Please note that a Roku Streaming Stick is only compatible with a Roku Voice Remote, which must be paired with the device. This explains why the Roku remote you currently have does not work as expected with your Roku device.
For more information, you can check this official Roku website about the Roku Voice Remote
We hope this helps, and let us know if you have further concerns or inquiries.
Thanks,
Kash
Thanks for the reply.
why would the remote pair with the stick then if it isn’t compatible? And why would it work with it until the stick connects to wifi?
ive read many other threads on here about people having the same issues, also with the voice remote.
this seems to be a Roku issue, your answer isn’t satisfactory as it doesn’t address the issue.
I am seeing the same thing. The remote works totally fine until the wifi is connected, then it stops working and I have to access the Roku from my phone.
Hi, @Boston_Bob
Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community.
I understand the trouble you have encountered with your Roku remote that stops working when connected to your WiFi, and we're here to provide you with steps that you can follow to resolve the issue.
This didn’t help.
And to be sure, the remote is absolutely compatible with the stick: I brought my stick with me on a trip, connected it to the TV, and the remote works no problem. Back home, when the wifi connects: no more remote.
So the remote works, is totally compatible with the stick, and maybe the many other users complaining about exactly the same problem are onto something: it’s a Roku issue that should be fixed rather than deflected as « a feature, not a bug »
As Manokig says, the standard troubleshooting procedure doesn't work. I also walked through this procedure with a Roku customer service rep (by chat). No luck.
When I factory reset the device, I can then pair the remote and then use it to enter the wifi information. Lots of buttons pushed to navigate and enter the wifi password. However, once I enter the wifi information and it connects, the remote stops working.
When I power up the Roku, for the few seconds when it is up and the wifi hasn't connected yet, the remote works. But once again, once the wifi is up the remote goes down.
Since my unit is in warranty, they are going to send me a new remote, but I have my doubts that this is going to work. Will update this thread when I find out.
Quite possible the remote is having issues authenticating the wifi-direct connection through the module in the Long-Range Wireless Receiver (LRWR) contained in the cable for your Streaming Stick.
If the new remote does not work when you receive it, I would begin to look at the LRWR as a possible culprit. If it was a firmware issue, I think we would be seeing more posts about it so does tend to lean toward a hardware issue.

However, just for troubleshooting to rule out a networking issue, are you able to connect your Streaming Stick to a mobile hotspot? (use your mobile app to try and connect to the hotspot). Then see if the remote you have begins to work.
If you cannot use your mobile hotspot and your mobile app at the same time, then Factory Reset the device again and use the phone as the mobile hotspot and try to use your physical remote to complete the setup and see if it now works.
If the remote works when using the Streaming Stick on a hotspot, then there may be an issue with the nework/router settings. The above troubleshooting should at least help you rule out.
OK. I have something like 8 Roku devices, and the remotes/devices have gotten mixed up.
I'm currently using this RC80 with my Express 4k+, 3941X.
Since the RC80 uses direct wifi for its connections, is it possible the 4k+ is not able to handle two wifi connections at the same time?
On the other hand I've been using this remote/device together for a long time (years), and it used to work,
unless there was some kind of firmware update that broke it.
The remote/device are only about 1/2 meter apart from one another.
Ok, if using the 3941, then disregard info about the LRWR mentioned in previous post. (not applicable).
There should be no issues with multiple Voice Remotes connected to your Roku device. (I have a couple connected to my 3941 currently.)
I know it sounds elementary, but is it possible the remotes got mixed up and you are no longer paired to the correct device? As a general rule, the Roku Remote will only work with the device that it is paired to. (it could be that the wifi is not actually being lost, it is that your Remote is not interacting with the correct device so appears non-responsive).
Try to re-pair the remote to the 3941. https://support.roku.com/article/360011621473

I have added a few more Ultra devices into my setup and sometimes keeping the remotes with the device is getting a bit more difficult since I added more V2 remotes to the setup as well. I can use any of the V2 remotes to communicate with any of my Ultras via IR so only notice I have the wrong one (or someone grabbed the wrong one) when I try to use it when it is not pointed at my device. (ie. needing it to communicate via RF). I have since had to label them to keep them straight.
In addition, even though I can use the same V2 amongst my Ultra devices, I cannot use it with my other devices like the 3941 and 3921 models (even via IR) since it is paired to one of my Ultras. And vice-versa, I cannot use the V2 paired with my 3941 at all with the Ultras.
