Re: ROKU Update is not working 004 error
Hi there, thanks for this advice. I've managed to get into the 'Secret Screen' but when I press 'Cycle software update server' nothing seems to happen. Should I expect to see something or does it update in the background?

None of the suggestions have worked I have 2 devices one updated the other didn’t. Error 004 and a blank screen. My device id is 65FMD

I was getting the same error code but fortunately for me it never froze up. But I tried everyone else’s ideas but was repeatedly thwarted from completing the update when it reached 99%, and said it can’t be updated.
So I went to the home screen and clicked 🈴 5 times, then ⬅️ 5 times to bring up the “Issue Report Tracker”, clicked OK and back to the Home Screen again.
Clicked the 🈴 5 times, then ⏩️ 3 times, then ⏪️ 3 times to bring up the “Secret Screen”. I then clicked “Cycle Software Update Server” from Beta to Release.
Next I clicked “Update Software” then “Update Now” and it began. Mine hit 97% and actually continued the Software Updates.
End result? “All Software is up to date.”
Hope this helps anyone else having similar issues.

When it try’s to update and I get the error code 004, I hit ‘OK’ my Roku device stops working. No icons on the screen just the blank background. This is lasting longer and longer every time. I’ve tried the reset and update menu and nothing works. I have to an unplug the Roku device for a few minutes and then power it up to be able to use it.
This is extremely frustrating

The Roku people are just "buying time" when telling you to plug, unplug, reset, give us your serial number..blah .blah..blah..What happened was they sent out an update that wasn't tested properly. (probably by some woke purple haired leftist) and now trying to figure out how to back out. All the while having the average user jump through a bunch of hoops to make them feel bad.

Yeh, I'm not sure but I saw this too (cycle software looks like nothing happens) but it still SEEMED to work, Roku rolled out an updated 14.5 release and I had to go thru the cycle software server and manual restart and it did update..
Maybe not really fixed but we may need to wait until the next update to find out. ]

Updates to my Roku box error code 004
When I boot up there is an update and when I try to update I get error code 004. How do I resolve this issue?

Try using a mobile hotspot connection (if available to you) instead of the home network to perform the update.
If you are able to stream fine using the home network, but encounter only this update issue, then the device/account may be having an issue connecting to the appropriate server (or the server is having an issue).
If you are having issues both streaming and updating, then reboot both your router and network equipment, as well as the Roku device (unplug for a few seconds or use Settings/System/System Restart or Settings/System/Power/System Restart).
Just another Roku user... I am not a Roku employee.

Re: Error 004 happening again and again [THIS WORKED FOR ME]
THIS WORKED FOR ME WITH MY Roku 3800R Streaming Stick from 2018:
1) I pulled the USB power cable from my SCEPTRE's (a nice, DUMB TV) USB port, and used the adaptor to plug into an AC outlet. Didn't change anything.
2) From the useless, spare "Roku / Time" screen displayed after failed updates, I was able to access the
UPDATE & RESET SECRET SCREEN:
HOME x 5
>> x 3
<< x 2
Tried "Cycle software update server" gave no feedback, so dunno if it did anything…also did the similar option just above it: "Cycle Streaming Store server" again, no feedback. After that, I selected "Update software"…don't recall whether I had to exit the screen, or if it just began doing its thing…was skeptical anything would work…it began downloading the update just the same as many times before, but THIS TIME, when it got near 85%, the "progress wheel" appeared for maybe one minute, then TV powered off & on, going through the similar system update machinations…often with no feedback & seemingly no change to the message on screen…I resisted the temptation to interrupt the process…and VOILA! It successfully did SOMETHING…couldn't really tell whether it updated the system or not (doesn't display enough decimal places where I looked, and didn't want to press my luck and break something), but at least I got back to the home screen and was able the use the Roku again…
