Re: Favorites above TV Guide - new feature

Jump to solution

I've been keeping an open mind about the banner, and I've used it a few times for short-term watching while I'm waiting for the news or prime-time TV. It's not a bad idea because even I get tired of navigating 100s of channels to find something to watch.

As usual, Roku forces their changes on all of us, as they brainstorm day and night to improve their product. There are two simple answers. The first one is a choice, but they think about the masses and not the few.

The second is so simple it may be too simple, when we left-click into the channel guide, we should end up in the channel guide like we always have. If we want to use their suggested program banner (or whatever they call it), we should click up into it. They are probably showcasing their banner, and that's why it comes up first. Clicking up would give us the choice we are asking for.

Has anyone heard from Roku?

Has there been any official response to this disaster?

Searching this forum I find nothing, but this forum is also fragmented, poorly developed, and hard to search properly. Replies don't even go to the comment you replied to, rather the whole thread. How dumb.

It's pretty ridiculous that all they have to do is copy Plex's live TV guide which has tabs that allow you to easily browse the guide, which also allows Plex to make recommendations like Roku is trying to do with this dumb banner. Plex has a "featured" tab which is the perfect solution to showcasing channels for users to discover.

I could do a better job developing this app in my time off, so I hope Roku has figured out by now what they're going to do, hopefully roll this feature back because there's no fixing it in its current form. And anyone with software development experience knows they're not going to add a setting to turn it on and off, which will only further complicate their interface in the long run. If they did that every time there was an issue like this, it would be a mess. They need an ELEGANT solution like has been suggested in various forms, just choose one.

This forum is doing their work for them, telling them what to do with their software to make us happy, and they can't even pay attention to that.

I bet this company is a mess internally. What a joke has this been without an official response.

@easytodobetterLiterally everyone is doing better than Roku now. I'm extremely happy with my Google TV, I'm setting up a Plex account as a backup, and I just bought a Tablo DVR for my OTA channels to further strengthen my system.

Remove icon ribbon above Live TV channel guide

Is there a way to remove that useless and intrusive icon ribbon that has recently appeared above the Live TV channel guide?   My channel guide has been messed up ever since that thing appeared.

Guide appearing on screen

The only Solution I have come up with is this and some will not like it .

what I did was I went to my computer and blocked Roku in the firewall

 next I did a Factory reset , then back to the computer and went to unblocked them in the firewall

it only works until the next update

@StevenCee

Oh, I SO agree with you!! You stated the issue so well.

I don't understand why they feel the need to keep adding "features" that are just the same thing in a slightly different format. All it does is cause the user to have to go through more unnecessary steps to get to what they want to see.

Why can't they offer a simple, slimmed down option for people who just want to use the TV without having to feel like they are being forced to go through a maze? Or jump through hoops?

Especially since the remote sold with the TV is so limited and you don't even have numbers to use on it. (If anyone mentions the ROKU app to have a remote on your phone, I am aware of that option but for reasons unknown to me I can't get that to work with my TV. 🤷🏼‍♀️)

At least, make it possible for users to go into Settings and either turn ON or OFF what they want or don't want. There are a few places in the settings with that option already (just a few) so please make that an option for more stuff like this new addition to the guide.

I feel like the TV gets hijacked with each new, significant update. Can we please have a little more control** or say over how our purchased TV operates?

** And when I say "a little more control" what I really mean is "a lot more control" or preferably "complete control" but that's unlikely to happen.

@MickNeil

I wholeheartedly agree with you!

Please let us have control over these "features" and let us turn them OFF if we want, on a TV we purchased.

Re: Live TV Channel Guide: View Current Shows When Browsing Channels

@DarkAngel24Working in both hardware and software development for decades, I can bet that they won't add a setting for this, and further complicate their software.

I'm just managing expectations here, not trying to be the bad guy.

It's just how companies like this handle software, if they added settings for everything it would become a mess. It's extremely rare, preferable to have a proper solution like Google TV, Plex, and many others have. Plex just uses tabs at the top of the guide, SO EASY. Why Roku can't copy that is because they're bad at their jobs, simple as that. It's not patents or intellectual property or anything else, Roku has worthlessly bad software developers and isn't giving this project the right resources.

They'll likely just roll it back if at all, so far there's no hope that they're hearing us or care, no official response, they're likely waiting for us to give up and get used to it or they've even calculated that losing a certain amount of customers is acceptable for "progress" if that's what they try to call this mess.

They screwed up previously with the default setting (to favorites if I remember correctly), then after a month or two changed it back to default to the channel guide all instead.

That is all they have to do here to make everyone happy, just make it default back to the channel guide instead of the banner.  They can leave the banner, just not default to it because it causes so many extra clicks.
