YouTube Chinese interference

Jump to solution

Why is it that after a YouTube video has played for 10 minutes or so.....all of a sudden the video is replaced by a Chinese woman crocheting?    or a Chinese teenager playing a video game?   or a Chinese Commercial?    This has been happening to me for at least a year now.   So annoying.

Aside from that problem;  when a YouTube station is playing a previously aired news program -  the picture shown on screen does not match the news story that they are talking about?  For example, I often get a still picture of President Donald Trump.....instead of a picture of the immigrants crossing the border.

Does this happen to anyone else?   I really don't know who to contact to report this.  Seems like a hack to me.

Hi @HunyBuny1,

Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thank you for contacting us for support, and we'd be more than happy to assist you.

Most channels have their commercials before, during, and after the video, and they can't be removed unless you have a premium subscription. For more detailed information, we highly advise contacting the channel provider. You can visit their support page here: Contact Us.

Best regards,

So I experienced this too and can confirm that @Daecon has the correct explanation.

This is due to third party YT channels highjacking a video, giving it an outrageous title so that you'll be drawn to click, then they cut off the news item to some random video of people going about their very boring daily life.

My advice is if you are wanting to see a CNN or MSNBC or NBC (it seems to be the main targets in my experiencw) just do a search for the channel itself then go to their own video listings to find what you are after.... So boring that YT does not ban these idjits...

Thanks to Daecon for his explanation!

It's happening to us as well. About halfway through a news video on Youtube, it cuts off and a Chinese girl is coloring a picture.

I've seen similar commentary online.

Some feel like it's a hacking test by a foreign country for a more widescale attack. (Conspiracy theory) Or maybe it's something harmless.

@soulseekersh

Any of you folks near somewhere that has a large Chinese population, like San Francisco? Here in the Metro New York city area it's not unusual to see ads in Spanish on TV or internet ads.  Also with online ads just about anything can show up.

Nowhere near a large population of any type. Oregon border.

I saw that other people are having the same thing happen, so I hoped to get a definitive reason why this is occurring.

Frankly I would not sweat it. Anyone can place an ad on anything streaming. It's the world of internet streaming ads. Anything can happen, such as the same ad multiple times in a row. Anyone who will pay can advertise just about anything anywhere online.

I have the exact same problem... OFF of Roku! I just did a search and signed on here so I could reply. The last three nights when watching YouTube, same thing happened; two were Asian women doing hobbies... one was something else-- forget what. If others are having this problem, then I imagine it's not my PC alone that is hacked, but some nationwide thing that we ought to be aware of. It's not a commercial, so whoever said the problem is "solved", doesn't understand what's going on. It's scary.

I am getting these way too often. An Asian woman crocheting or a group of Asian men eating. It’s NOT an ad!  It will just break into the program on you tube and never go off until you log off and back in. I’m convinced it has something to do with that Chinese spy balloon that went completely across the USA a while back. They have gathered information that allows them to do this. It’s unwanted and probably criminal and definitely some type of aggressive move towards us. A trial run of something more that will be coming is my thought. I am going to take action. Write to your congressman.  He more the better.
