Sorry, I don't understand "opening on stream gates".
The manual system update check has changed. Previously, if there were several channel (aps) updates, each one would be listed so you would know what changed. Now you just get an unhelpful message like, "opening stream gates," while the channels update.
@Ma_Fe If you did not get your problem solved try removing power from the device for at least 45 seconds. Don't remove the HDMI cable from the TV if this is not a TV, just unplug the device.

Aha! One of those cutesy attempts at Start-Trek-like phrases. It's nothing new, they've been around for a long time. Sometimes I see them, sometimes I see specific channels listed as being updated.
Here's how I'd approach this if I had this problem
I agree with @HDMIGuy. The first thing I'd try would be to restart the Roku. Since you're stuck in the update, you can't use the menu options, so do it by unplugging from power for a bit then plugging back in as suggested. And applying the belt and suspenders approach, while having the Roku powered down and before plugging it back in, I'd restart my WiFi router as well.
Never having had this problem, I don't know what state the Roku would start back up in. It might detect it was in the middle of an update and try to complete it, or I think it's probably more likely to just go to the Roku home screen.
If at the home screen, I'd have a go at resetting the wifi connection. Settings > Network > Set up connection > wireless. After that connects, I'd do a manual update check via Settings > System > Power (if you have it, if not skip) > Software update > Check now.
If it still fails to complete the update, some people have reported they could get their Roku to complete its update by setting up to use a different WiFi network via Settings > Network > Set up connection to do the update - perhaps using a WiFi hotspot on a mobile phone or by taking it to a friend's house. If successful, then redo the WiFi connection to use your intended WiFi network.
