Re: Roku no longer supporting VidAngel

Jump to solution

I chose to switch to Roku because they appeared to be the platform that every thing was on and now you do this. I see this as a slap in the face for family oriented entertainment. Is it because this is Christian organization? It sure looks like to me. I will never buy another Roku device, Roku TV nor will I purchase anymore of your movies. I am done with you! You have stepped over the line on this one.

@pcbcadman, read the thread.  The porn people are just as upset.  There's no conspiracy here.

The more I think about this, the more it leads me to believe that Roku must have made some deal with one of the larger streaming providers (maybe Disney+) where they would only get a compatible app if they agreed to NEVER approve VidAngel's app.  This would explain their odd behavior with VidAngel.  It would explain why they're not willing to discuss the details with anyone.  Maybe we need to contact the FTC about this.  It's very anti-competitive and discriminatory against VidAngel.

I also have 2 TVs with roku streaming stick + on each one.  This whole thing has made me start looking for another streaming device option.  I thought I had found the platform that would work for us for everything.  I once owned an apple tv and chromecast, and I got rid of them because they were no longer needed (and old).  I now have apple homekit on roku to work with my iphone.  I just hate this Roku dropping vidangel mess.  I wonder what other channels or apps I may lose also.

Any you added via a code on the Roku website because they weren't in the Channel Store.  I personally received about 50 emails from Roku about channels I developed that are being removed, so believe me I'm not too happy about it.

If you've installed any channel with a private code, rather than installing it from the Roku Channel Store, it will be removed as well. Anything installed from the channel store will remain. Roku has only shut down support for non-certified channels.

After a little research, I have moved to the onn.AdroidTV from Walmart. At $19.88, it performs quite well.

Yes, I know, it's a Google product. I don't like that part either, but for now, it's a matter of choosing which company you will allow to spy on you. And with some configuration changes, you can block a fair bit of the spying traffic.

I did write VidAngel support to ask them if they would ever consider making their own streaming device. The support person said she didn't know, but she would pass the idea along. Perhaps if enough people request it...?

Haha! I saw that! Wow! Talk about alienating people in broad brushstrokes!

How does the old saying go? "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," or something like that.

This is just another reminder that we, the users, are not the customer, but rather the product.

Cheers!

VidAngel will help replace your Roku

Roku is turning their backs on VidAngel (and not explaining), but Amazon and Google are filling in the void.  I contacted VidAngel and they are willing to reimburse $30 for an Amazon Fire or Android TV device.  I'm not sure why Roku will not explain themselves; are they against parental control, being bullied by Disney, ...?  Either way it may be time to align with those that have similar values and convictions to empower parents like Amazon, Google, Netflix, ...
