Re: Roku Media Player stops playing video file midway through

Jump to solution

I've given up on the Roku Media Player and now use the Media Player that came built in my Samsung Smart TV.  So far, it has played all files flawlessly using various types of USB Media.

@jdel68 and @Viibes - here's my solution, which has been working for a few months now. It ain't VLC, but it's made by an independent developer. I dropped $3.99 on the PlayUSB app from the Roku store, and it works just fine. If you're having issues, give this solution a whirl. We shouldn't have to spend an additional $3.99, but for a relatively low cost, it eliminated the headaches from Roku Media Player.

The last update for Roku Media Player was in 2022!
Hard at work is hard to believe.

Just buyout this PlayUSB App and integrate your front end UI.
Voila. Done.

I’ve given up on it as well. Its quite sad really, not one update in over a year yet another coder has a functioning player on their market.

Problem with using the internal TV player for me is that I cannot loop it back to the Hue Sync HDMI Box.
Also some HDR’s dont play well with my internal player.

That being said.
PlayUSB works like a charm.

This!

I was about to buy a NVIDIA Shield and figured why not try this cheaper than an “uber tip” APP and hey, it works, after a hard reboot. Prior to the reboot it still sometimes stoped playing.

Knowing it worked for you gave me the go to give it a try so thanks ☺️
The UI images looked terrible which is why I never took the plunge.

Still looks awful, but who cares… it works, everytime.

Re: Roku Media Player stops playing video file midway through

Roku Media Player (RMP) has not received any updates for video playback in over three years. A previous Roku developer advised me the player functions are actually within the Roku OS (a modified version of Linux) and RMP is simply the user interface.

There is no question that RMP has some major issues that need addressing. Personally I switched to using an Nvidia Shield for my local media years ago, mainly because the Shield will bitstream the lossless audio codecs that Roku devices cannot do. But it's also for caption support (Roku can only display text based captions). I am hopeful that Roku will look more closely at these issues as they begin work on their next OS version. Even though I had brought much of this to the beta developers, I was apparently too late to get any hope of 12.5 addressing them. So fingers crossed that they take these issues seriously as they continue development.

Was going the Nvidia Shield route aswell but tried the USBPlayer App first which seemed to function but recently showed it to will crash on High Bitrate HDR content.

Guess its Nvidia Shield for the WIN!
But… waiting for a “hopeful” 2024 upgraded version as the current model is from 2017.

I gave up on the Roku for playing videos from a flash drive and purchased an Android TV box for less than $50 and installed on it the free Nova Media Player.

The current (and most recent) Shield was released in 2019. The biggest change was adding Dolby Vision support, but they also offer the "tube" model for less money. The only potential issue with the tube (and I have one) is it only supports 32 bit apps, while the Pro supports 64 bit. Not that I ever noticed any issue with that, but it does mean the app developers have to either offer both versions or decide to only support one (usually the 64 bit).

I looked into the TUBE model… its seems to not have a dedicated USB input.
Only the PRO would work for me.

You are right about the 2019 date tho, missed that.
The 64bit software should run quicker too.
