Purchased ESPN subscription . Still requiring cable provider to watch?

purchased an ESPN subscription to watch the football game and its telling me I need a cable provider to view it.  WHAT was the purpose of paying for a subscription if I need a CABLE COMPANY to view it?

    Unfortunately, ESPN+ (or minus as it should be called) doesn't give you access to ESPN.  That's ESPN's call and most likely because of agreements they have with cable companies.
