I saw an ad for breadsticks while pausing a show on the Roku Channel in the upper left corner of the screen.

If this minimizes the amount of ad breaks, I am actually fine with it I think. I am not sure if it would bother me to see an occasional small ad playing in the corner as long as the content continued to play. (the breadstick ad was just a still image). If ads start playing in the corner in addition to the regular ad breaks then this would be an unwelcome addition/feature.
