I submitted the new version to be published so it can be installed from this link until Roku fixes their channel store:

Here is how the direct HLS works:
In the "Stream URL" field, start with "hls:".

  • If the "Stream URL" looks like hls:/aaa/bbb/ccc.m3u8 then the values from the IP, Port, Login and Password will be used to create the URL.

  • If the "Stream URL" looks like hls:http://www.somesite.com/someuri.m3u8 the application will use the URL without making modifications.
Also, the "Stream URL" could look like rtsp://www.somesite.com/aaa.bbb , but this will require a Raspberry or Orange Pi and it will start the hls stream on the Pi (no camera discovery and configuration on the Pi needs to be done). I will put more details in the Help.
Let me know if this works for you.
Thanks.

Works great, thanks! Although now that this is working, I noticed I can't get the PTZ stuff to work. Didn't try it before, but according to the docs, supposed to hit * when viewing a camera? That brings up the Roku "Options" side-menu and I get no PTZ.

PTZ works if the application can control the camera directly and only if the camera is ONVIF compliant. Fill in the IP, Port, login, password, click the "ONVIF Auto Config" button and after it finds all the camera features, click Cancel on the ONVIF dialog so your hls URL stays. Save the camera and now PTZ will work fine. You won't get the "help" remote over the HLS video by pressing the "*" (star) on the remote, that works only with mjpeg.
The arrows move the camera, fast forward and fast rewind handle the zoom, play jumps from preset to preset and replay sends camera back home.

Camera is ONVIF compliant (works with other ONVIF apps). It seems the only PTZ control that works is the play button to cycle through the presets. None of the other controls work. A couple of other things too. While the HLS stream shows when I view full screen for the camera, it only shows "Loading..." on the menu screen. It also doesn't seem work on the split screen view.

Not sure why the ptz doesn't work with your camera, I tried ptz with several brand and they all work fine.

On the menu screen, the preview doesn't work with HLS, there is no way for me to extract images to show there from HLS.

Split screen also doesn't work with HLS, Roku can only play one video at the time. Also, the screen saver doesn't work with HLS, Roku doesn't allow videos in screensaver.

Re: IP Camera Viewer Basic and Pro, fresh out of the oven (ONVIF, RTSP coming soon)

Hello Ioan,

Tested the new version via the add channel link in the previous post, still having problems but symptoms have changed slightly, you can start a preview or quickly jump past the preview and view a videostream in full screen mode, problem is once you exit the stream the Sumpple Cam will lock out and give nothing but a black screen until you reboot the cam.

Still working ok in snapshot mode.

Re: IP Camera Viewer Basic and Pro, fresh out of the oven (ONVIF, RTSP coming soon)

Does anyone know a better way to get support from the developer? I sent an email to support@rokucam.com about 2 weeks ago, but no response.

I have several Amcrest cameras. I cannot get them to work in this Roku channel. I have bought the Pro version. I believe the proper URL for the MJPEG stream is:

http://myuser:mypassword@192.168.1.56:8 ... /video.cgi?[channel=<1>]&subtype=1

When I put this URL into a new Chrome Incognito window, I am first challenged for the authentication credentials. After entering the credentials, the MJPEG stream displays as expected in Chrome.

In this Roku channel, I have configured the camera this way:
IP: 192.168.1.56
Port: 80
User: myuser
Password: mypassword
MJPEG URL: /cgi-bin/mjpg/video.cgi?[channel=<1>]&subtype=1

When I highlight this camera in the Roku channel, it just keeps spinning on loading. When I select it, I just get a screen with a crossed line through a cloud.

Any thoughts on what is going wrong here? I would really like to get this working. Thank you.

I answer to all emails asking for support, I didn't get yours. Did you try selecting Amcrest from the camera brands in the application or using the ONVIF auto config? Note, the Substream must be configured as MJPEG. Also, make sure you are using the latest version that you can install from here:

Re: IP Camera Viewer Basic and Pro, fresh out of the oven (ONVIF, RTSP coming soon)

Thanks for the quick response ioan.

I did try selecting Amcrest as the camera brand in the app config, but did not resolve it. I tried using ONVIF auto config as well, but it reported that it could not find any cameras. I also just checked the substream config again and it is configured as:
Encode Mode: MJPEG
Resolution: VGA (640*480)
FPS: 30
Bit Rate Type: CBR
Bit Rate: 2048

I'll add that latest version from your link when I return home and test again.

Re: IP Camera Viewer Basic and Pro, fresh out of the oven (ONVIF, RTSP coming soon)

Thanks for writing such a great app. Combined with your Raspberry Pi server, this working extremely well with my range of IP cameras.

I'd like to try the latest version https://my.roku.com/add/P9ZDPJ but it says it is not available in my region (UK)... any thoughts on how I can gain access?

I'm happy that you like the application, don't forget to rate it in the Roku channel store.

The latest is the one published (version 4.3 build 10). That code allowed people to try the current version before it was published.

Hikvision 4K Cameras No Video

I have three 4K Hikvision cameras, and go through onvif config and it appears to succeed, except that I don't actually get the video. My Android phone can see the videos using the onvifer app using the same setup credentials on the same network segment, so not sure what else to try. Suggestions on how to debug?

Hi Michael,
IP Camera Viewer works natively only with mjpeg or jpeg encoded rtsp stream. Make sure that your cameras support it and that mjpeg is enabled for your substream. If you want to be able to use the h.264 stream from the cameras, you need a raspberry or orange pi (read this https://github.com/e1ioan/rokuphp ).
