I don't WANT it there either. However, if the kids don't see it on Roku, sadly, they'll see it elsewhere. So, if Roku can't put that kind of content behind a switch, I think the best thing to do is use it as a teaching moment.
Remove them.
Remove them then. LGBTQ aren’t going anywhere. Thanks.
I'd believe that you cannot hide LGBTQ from children forever. One solution DVDs, second read a book. Find activities to do that they won't need to be watching TV. And if they happen to hear something like that explain to them what it is because you don't have to go into detail just figure out a simple way to tell them that you are not comfortable for them watching something like that then my question you but don't brush it off but just use your parental intelligence to make the right decision.
Don’t worry… you’re not going to catch “gay” or whatever it is that you’re worried about. Your kids will be just fine knowing that the world is made up of all types of people who may not resemble their immediate surroundings. I guarantee you’re kids are not offended, if they’re even aware. And if they are aware, then it may be time for a conversation and a teachable moment. Hopefully you’ll teach them something positive.
I totally get that children will inevitably see something that we'd prefer they don't. When this happens, having a discussion with them is much better than burying your (and their) head in the sand and ignoring it. However, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't do our best to provide limits to what they see, especially at early ages. If roku decides tomorrow to advertise porn, violence, or gore in the home screen ads should we just accept it as normal and have a "teaching moment" with a 3 year old? I think not.
I'm not asking for content itself to be filtered, thats my job as a grandparent. I'm asking Roku not to show something that I find offensive in a place on my TV that I have no control over. Otherwise my only option remaining is to remove roku devices.
If I'm not mistaken there are parental controls available thru the settings menu. Just scroll thru may take a bit to find them but they are there. Whenever my nephew and nieces I make sure to activate them during there visit.
Well said! Everyone wants choices. My choice is to not see that stuff on my television unless I select to see it. I have friends from all walks of life, but we don’t sit around talking about their private lives, nor do I tell them about mine. Their parades are fine. I don’t have to attend, but don’t force me to watch it.
Here's a techie answer to a question that ROKU themselves should be able to answer... block the advertising with a DNS filter.
I use pihole,
however there are services that should be able to manage much of the advertising you receive on all your devices. Check out opendns.com if you'd like to use a managed service.
Is it perfect? No.
It does get rid of those ROKU advertising placards on the main menu.
