There may be some exceptions out there (I don't know of any) but for the most part when you "cancel" while in the middle of a subscription period, it prevents the subscription from auto-renewing for another period, but the balance of the current pre-paid subscription remains in force until it runs out. This is true whether subscribed directly with the channel or when through a third party like Roku, Amazon, etc.
Roku is set up so that it will not let you remove a channel app to which you have subscribed THROUGH ROKU, as long as the subscription remains active, even if you have stopped its auto-renewal.
As a work around, for immediate channel removal you can use the official Roku remote app on an Android/iOS phone/tablet. This will only remove the channel from your Roku; it will NOT cancel the paid subscription or prevent auto-renewal.
• At the bottom of the first screen, click "Devices", and if necessary connect to one of your Roku devices.
• In your connected device click on "Apps on Roku".
• Click AND HOLD the channel you wish to remove (a quick click will bring up the remote controls instead).
• Click on "Remove" and confirm.
