Just turned on my TV to see a video open on the home screen and play some trailer? I hope this was a fluke. I trashed all of my Amazon boxes years ago because of this garbage. If it keeps up, my Rokus will be next.

I have an Ultra 4k player. I don't use it for anything other than playing other services. Now... it's bad enough that the home screen is flooded with ads. But today when I went to use the device it tried to force me to watch an ad before I could select my ap. This is unacceptable and if it continues, I'm trashing this device. How dare you force me, on a device that I ALREADY paid for, to watch a streaming ad before choosing an ap to watch another service. This needs to stop and I want to know how to do it.

I also got this. It was a Moana 2 ad and it had a "close" button if I wanted to dismiss it.
I don't have a picture of it, but it's clearly a new feature that Roku has just rolled out.
If it happens again, I'll also be getting rid of all roku products.

No... no one is going to have a picture of it. We don't sit here watching TV with a camera ready to take a screen shot. Two of us have had the exact same experience and this experience is unacceptable. Keep it up and your device will be trashed and I won't be buying another one.

One more instance and I smash the **bleep** thing with a hammer. Completely unacceptable.

Same had wicked blasting about watching. Came here and I see I’m not alone. I Will absolutely get rid of Roku if the play that stuff.

This is absolutely unacceptable and I will never use or sell a roku device again if this happens. I cannot believe they thought they can get away with a full screen obtrusive ad.

Just started tonight on one of our ultras (we have four roku devices in the house). They're all a bit older and I was thinking about getting newer models but if this is the route things are going I will absolutely change to different hardware. This is completely unacceptable, remove it immediately. And no, I'm not willing to pay monthly to restore functionality I already paid over $60 for. You have competitors, Roku, this is a great way to lose a ton of market share to them.

Lately when ever i turn on the box in the morning or when it turns on after screen savers time out, the roku device automaticly tunes in to something that is trending but it is not what i want. how do i make that stop.

I have 5 TV's in my house that all have a Roku device hooked up, two of them having the latest Roku ultra (2024). I also have 5 Roku cameras and a number of light bulbs. I pay for the monthly smart home subscription.
Roku, let me be super clear: if any of my devices start forcing ads that block my ability to use my device for the duration of the advertisement or even require me to push a button on the remote to skip the ad, I will throw all your sh*t in the garbage and switch to something else.
I've stuck with Roku over the last decade because of the simplicity and reliability of your products. Don't ruin them with forced ads. You WILL lose users (including myself). Whatever greedy C-suite exec thought this was a good idea (even for "testing") should be immediately fired and an apology issued to users who were part of this test group.
I WILL drop the money to switch everything to Apple TV if you force my hand. And there are plenty of other (probably even better) options for smart home devices...

Apparently Roku is trying to shove advertisements down our throats before we can use our TVs now. It's complete B.S. that I can't use my other devices, PS4, Switch, etc. before Roku forces me to watch an advertisement. I will be dumping my TCL Roku TV if this isn't fixed. Roku doesn't have the right to hijack all of our devices!

Yeah I'm back to using my Chromecast if this ad stupidity continues.

Unacceptable.
Video/audio advertising that I have to take action to dismiss before getting to the home screen is unacceptable.
Stop it. You have 1 month before I yeet all my roku devices and you lose all the revenue you get from advertising & tracking me.

Yep I just got my first autoplay ad with sound and I will be finding a replacement device ASAP if this continues.
- kevinbrueknoads6 months agoNewbie
I just saw an auto play ad for Moana when I turned on my Roku today.
I don’t need to put up with ads on my Roku home screen - I will choose any other product if you put auto play ads there.
Please rethink this “feature.”

What is everyone going to switch to now that Roku is forcing ads on us? This is bull**bleep**, I want a refund. I guess back to chromecast?

You can run some of the streaming services that are the basis of Roku channels on any old browser. I haven't tried setting Netflix up in Kodi, but I hear that it works, DRM and all.

There's nothing delightful about this experience, ESPECIALLY the noise of it. Now I need to mute my Roku TV before pressing HOME? Just for a little peace and quiet in my own home?
More ens***tification.
If you are in the business of forcing a product on users, you should be so ashamed as to be wearing a paper bag over your head.

As far as alternatives you could just build a raspberry pi and hook it up to a tv. There's tons of software you can run on it that would work for that purpose, basically just like a streaming stick. It would be less locked down, have more options, and its a fun project. If you've never built anything electronic either it's a good solid easy entrypoint.

After over a decade using the latest and greatest Roku, and 6 devices right now in my home. I got fed up with all the bugs and slowness and jumped ship to Apple TV 4K and let me tell you, the experience cannot be any better. Every single app I need is there, and it is superfast, with the greatest image and sound fidelity I have ever experienced from any streamer so far.
I will continue to my migration and replace the 5 remaining Rokus in my house with 4K Apple TVs boxes.

If I see it, I dump my Roku.

I had an autoplay ad on my Roku Ultra homescreen last night that would not allow me to select an app until the ad finished. THAT IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. If that continues, I will never purchase another ROKU product and will no longer recommend ROKU, which I have done in the past. What were they thinking? I can't imagine a better way to offend customers.
Maybe it is time to bring a class action against ROKU for remotely harming a product we've bought and paid for.

I agree, especially on the suit. If I had known this was going to happen, I would have never bought a Roku TV. It is one thing to move to other another device, but it is not like I am going to pay for another TV over it.

You could try
Settings/Accessibility/Auto-play video
and set it to Off
I did that when they started with the videos on the right side ad box.
Currently shopping alternate streaming boxes.

I actually already had auto-play video turned off and it played anyway.

bye bye Roku if this continues. there are other options, and I have no problems leaving
