I have a TCL8K Roku TV that I bought in the fall 2024. The software is 13.1.4 build 1514-AH.
I have a shop Roku TV in my bedroom that’s five years old and the software is 14.1.
The problem I’m having is that I can’t get the Max app to work on the newer TV, but it works in my bedroom on the older TV.
I am connected to the Internet,
Bsull263, I couldn't believe it when I noticed it a while back, but I'm pretty sure your 8k TV is considered a "Legacy" model. It's no longer receiving updates and 13.1 is the last available software version. The following list shows the "8k Roku TV" model E000X under "Legacy models", but I'm sure that applies to all models starting with an E. You can find your TV's Roku model number under Settings->System->About.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for a TV that I'm sure wasn't cheap.

You are exactly correct and it happened to me too. I am beyond pissed off for what I paid for that TV, especially that our other Roku TVs that are much much more inferior can accept the upgrade and have no issue. We no longer can watch HBO MAX and other streaming services due to this issue (no software upgrade available) on our 8K E model. I think a class action should be established. When I buy a new TV (because now I have to), it will NOT be a Roku. Lawyers, get ahold of me and others on this one. Complete nonsense and total fraud.

aankotech1, I'd be pretty upset as well, but you don't have to scrap the TV. Just get another streaming device (Roku or otherwise) and connect it to the TV. Is there any service streaming in 8k? I do recall something about TCL starting some kind of service, but I don't know if it ever happened.

Thanks Renojim. Do you think if I install a Roku Ultra 2024 Ultimate Streaming Player 4K Streaming Device for TV with HDR10+, Dolby Vision & Atmos - Bluetooth & Wi-Fi 6- Rechargeable Voice Remote Pro with Backlit Buttons - Free & Live TV to bypass the internal software update necessity, that I can get the TV to accept the streaming services, without having to buy a new TV?

I am currently running a TCL Roku TV 75" Model E103X, with Software version 13.1.4.1514 (will no longer update to higher versions). I am hoping that spending the $79.00 would be better than my $2500+ I spent on that TV going to waste.

My 8k 75" is now a Legacy model. That is the worst BS I have EVER had a TV manufacture make. Fix this or I will go to the BBB. I will never buy another Roku product again!

If it is a TCL or one of those other non-Roku brands, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer and complaining to them.

I contacted TCL with the same exact issue. They told me it's not LEGACY..but they do not offer a way to correct the issue. I am no longer able to access the MAX app because Roku and TCL won't update this tv to 14.1. This is lame. Expensive TV is now a brick basically.

ROKU, can you answer to this? Why would a 3 year old 8K tv be listed as Legacy? This looks bad for ROKU and bad for TCL.

As noted elsewhere, even though the TV may only be 3 years old, some of the underlying hardware may have been underpowered, or required 3rd party hardware drivers that are no longer being updated. Roku isn't to blame, it's TCL for cutting corners.
To clarify, much of the hardware is made by 3rd parties (not TCL). That includes individual chips for network, video, etc... Without knowing what chipsets are used, it's hard to tell what is going on with hardware driver support.
A close equivalent is phones. Qualcomm and others make many of the chips used in phones. They would only supply driver updates for 3 years. That is why OS software updates would often stop after that. Apple has generally used their own hardware, so offers longer times. Google started making their own hardware, and now offer 7 years on newer Pixel phones. I think Samsung made some deals recently to keep updates for 7 years or so, too.

Roku would not be able to answer why a third-party manufacturer that paid to use the Roku OS would have issues. That would be for TCL to answer why they are not providing support to keep the TV updated. TCL (like all of the budget brands) most likely cut corners on the hardware they used and the hardware they use is not capable of handling the current OS and/or apps or is not being supported by the manufacturers of those specific hardware pieces. In all likelihood, they used older hardware that was nearing the end of its support life (because it saved them money because it cost less) when manufactured into the TV.

Funny thing is I contacted TCL, and they told me to contact ROKU support to see why they have labeled it Legacy. You'd think TCL would know the reason. This is horrible customer service.
