Remote does something else than selected

Randomly, when I select a function (e.g., fast forward or fast reverse), the consequence is something unexpected such as exiting the program to opening another application to turning off the television. What is causing this and how can I correct this aberration?

    We would recommend starting with the troubleshooting steps suggested in this link: How to fix your Roku voice or simple remote that is not working. If the issue persists, please reply here with the serial number of the Roku device associated with the affected remote. This can be found at the back or underneath the player itself.
