First Roku remote I received with buttons on the side drove me crazy for all of maybe 5 days. I guess some people are more trainable than others.
NOT a matter of being "trainable" remote control operators: some have large hands & digits. I have medical condition with symptoms affecting areas of motor & sensory. This means I can't feel most buttons, nor hold remote itself easily while pressing side TV keys. I struggle to press buttons with accuracy. And try to avoid accidentally holding TV volume UP or worse: BUMP preset key--abruptly jumps to Netflix midway thru viewing show on channel app. Finding your place isn't always easy.
