Old remote worked with TV and 5.1 amp

I have a Roku plugged into a Sony 5.1 surround sound receiver. There is a Sony television also plugged into the receiver. My old remote turned the TV on and off and controlled the volume in the receiver. It died. I bought the new rechargeable remote. It will not try more then one code for the TV, so it will not control the receiver.  Is there a way to get it to work like the old remote?
