My Roku remote will not pair to my sharp tv

I have a Sharp TV. Not a roku sharp tv. Just a plain sharp tv. It’s like 3 or 4 years old. I bought roku streaming stick plus and the remote won’t pair to control volume and power. It tries multiple codes but then says it can’t pair to sharp tv. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it? Or should I buy another brand streaming stick? I would think that Sharp is a popular brand.
