I want to skip commercials on live tv with a Roku TV

I don't have DirecTV, but I suspect your friend was using some kind of feature it provides like a DVR.  That's not a general feature of Roku devices.

For your old TV you'd need a very old Roku device (not recommended) or device that converts HDMI to RCA connections to go with the Roku device like this.
