How to stop the Roku remote from controlling the AVR

I have a Roku 4802x connected to a Samsung UN46C6400RF TV.  The TV is connected to a Yamaha RX-V473 via an optical cable for my surround.  This setup worked fine for a long time, but for some reason, my Roku remote has started changing the audio input on the Yamaha whenever we hit the home or power buttons on the Roku remote. Chat support tells me it's an issue with my TV, and I need to contact Samsung because the remote supposedly does not control the Yamaha.  I've tried switching to the CEC setup and turning off 1-touch play. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • It's not you. It's the firmware update that came out in April.
Everything worked great on our system for years. Then all of a sudden, Roku claimed superiority over everything through CEC. It kept telling us our TV was the brand of our AMP and was controlling everything through there.
The miscommunication through all of the systems got so bad that it would take 5 minutes to turn on the system involving some constant play between the TV, Amp and roku. It would lock out the tv so that there was no way to even use the tv remote because it kept choosing the amp as soon as it was turned.
I tried everything. Tonight I tried an CEC blocker between the Roku and the Amp. Now we are back to all CEC free and only IR with a ROKU voice plus remote that we can't use for anything except choosing channels and simple playback.
All changed with the firmware update. No other changes were made to the TV or amp. It was all Roku. Whatever they did messed everything up so I had to pay even MORE money just to simply used the system.

  • Samsung tv. Yamaha AV amp. Roku Ultra.

Everything worked fine until April, 2025, controlling all audio & video via the Roku remote.

Now, the remote is perpetually freezing.

CEC is exactly what is causing this. For most users, this is a desired action as you normally should not be pressing a button on the Roku remote unless you want the Roku to be on the screen for viewing. Chat support is correct that the Roku remote does not control the Yamaha, but they are overlooking the limited functions that CEC can control. As you noted, pressing a button on the Roku remote will cause the AVR (and TV) to switch to the input necessary to display the Roku on the TV. There is nothing wrong. If you are not intending to use the Roku, I don't know why you are pressing a button on the remote.

Now, how to disable CEC? As you noted, on the Roku the menu function is called One Touch Play. But sometimes CEC still passes through even with that setting off. In that case you must go into the Yamaha settings and disable HDMI control (CEC functions over HDMI). I have a Yamaha RX-V583 and RX-V679, both have been connected to Samsung and LG TVs without a problem. I greatly enjoy the way CEC will switch the inputs to my Roku or Shield when I simply press a remote button.

I am not certain why you are using optical to send the TV sound to the AVR, as both the TV and AVR support ARC. One less cable to run to the TV.
