That's generally correct. The only time you might want to check manually for updates is if you're having some kind of issue. It ensures you have the latest software and also lets you know if the device is having some kind of problem updating. While it checks daily, it doesn't report any problems that may have occurred during the check.

Also, some people power their Roku from a TV's USB port. In that case, the Roku is not powered up 24/7 and cannot check overnight. I just happened to check my Premiere, which is powered by the TV. It hadn't updated since Jan 25, so I did a manual refresh.
