Picture quality looks grainy and lots of banding

I've had Roku for a while, and though I like the idea of it, the image quality is horrible. Lots of banding, noise, grain. It doesn't look like HD.

I'm using wifi, the signal strength is excellent according to Roku's settings.  I've tried different HDMI cables too. So why is the image quality so bad?

thanks,

  • Excellent signal strength is good, but what about the speed? If you don't consistently see around 6-8mbps or higher, then HD will suffer. Also what apps and shows are you viewing? There are some apps showing old shows from when everything was SD, and there are even some apps which look like some guy's VHS tape collection.

Welcome to the Roku Community, Shortytaco!

I appreciate you bringing your picture quality issue with your Roku device to our attention, and I would be happy to assist you further.

To begin, could you let me know if this issue is occurring on a particular channel? Also, have you had a chance to try adjusting the display type settings? If not, I would be glad to guide you through the steps below:

    1. Press Home on your Roku remote.
    2. Scroll and select Settings.
    3. Select display type.
    4. Select one of the available display types and press OK on your remote.

After adjusting the display type, please follow up with a system restart. To do this, go to Settings > System > Power/System Restart.

Additionally, you can check our support article on improving image quality using picture modes on your Roku TV system.

    Hope this helps!

I don’t see display type in my settings menu. How can I fix this issue without that option?

        Thanks for chiming in, Rosegarden!

What Roku model are you using? We’d like to check it out. Also, if you're having problems with picture quality, have you tried connecting to a different internet connection to see if that makes a difference?
