No Xbox cloud gaming app on Roku?

So does the rokutv os not support the xbox cloud app or any web browser? Its rather frustrating finding any information on this topic. I'm considering just returning the new smart tv i just bought just because of how crippled the roku OS seems to be.

  • As far as I am aware, browsers are not currently supported on Roku.

Those things are unlikely to ever be supported, so if they're important to you, you may want to return it while you can or find a device that you can connect to it that does support them.

I don't see any matches for "xbox" in the channel store, and searching for threads, I see maybe one thread that references such a thing, so I can see where it would be frustrating to find info. Keep in mind that pretty much every app on Roku (besides the ones that include "Roku" in the name) are created by the content companies (Paramount, NBC, Warner etc.) so if you want an Xbox app for Roku, it would be a good idea to let Microsoft know.

I wouldn't think of a Roku and a Roku remote being much of a gaming platform, so maybe that's what MS is thinking too.

One issue devices tend to have is that they try to do too much and be too many things.  Maybe it will eventually be added, but I personally like a device that does streaming of movies/TV shows/music and various networks and does it well versus trying to be a jack of all trades that give a mixed experience.

    Hello
Roku OS does not currently support the Xbox Cloud Gaming app or a web browser, limiting its compatibility with gaming platforms. This has been a common frustration for users looking for versatile functionality. For a more gaming-friendly experience, you might explore devices like Chromecast with Google TV or Amazon Fire TV. Evaluate your usage needs to decide if a return is the right choice.

  • Roku TVs, running the Roku OS, are designed as streamlined smart TV platforms focusing on media streaming, but they lack some functionality found in other smart TV ecosystems like Android TV or Fire TV. Unfortunately, this includes support for apps like the Xbox Cloud Gaming app, Terabox Link Video Downloader or a fully functional web browser. Here's why this limitation exists and some alternative solutions:

Why Roku OS Doesn't Support Web Browsers or Xbox Cloud Gaming

    1. Simplicity Focus: Roku OS prioritizes ease of use and performance over versatility. Web browsing and game streaming apps demand more processing power and development effort, which Roku has not invested in.
    2. Limited App Ecosystem: Unlike Android TV, Roku’s app store is tightly controlled, with only selected apps approved for release.
    3. Gaming Support: Roku is not geared towards gaming and does not offer robust controller integration, which limits its appeal for platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Alternatives for Your Roku Smart TV

If you're frustrated with these limitations but don't want to return your TV, consider these solutions:

    1. Use a Streaming Stick or External Device:

      • Plug in a device like an Amazon Fire Stick, Chromecast with Google TV, or an NVIDIA Shield TV. These platforms support the Xbox Cloud Gaming app and web browsers.
      • This adds functionality without replacing your TV.
    2. Screen Mirroring:

      • Use screen mirroring or casting from your smartphone, tablet, or PC to the Roku TV. Roku supports Miracast and AirPlay, so you can mirror the Xbox Cloud app from your device.
    3. Game Streaming Consoles:

      • Pair your Roku TV with an Xbox console or other devices like a PlayStation. These devices can run cloud gaming services and stream the content to your Roku.
    4. Upgrade Your Ecosystem:

      • If web browsing and game streaming are must-haves, an Android TV or Fire TV set may be a better fit. These platforms offer extensive app support, including cloud gaming services.

Considerations Before Returning Your Roku TV

    • What’s Your Primary Use?: If media streaming is your main focus, Roku TVs excel at this with support for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and others.
    • What Are You Missing?: If cloud gaming or browsing is critical, a different TV OS might be worth considering.

    Recommended Smart TV Alternatives

If you’re leaning towards returning your Roku TV, here are better-suited options:

    1. Google/Android TV (e.g., Sony, TCL):
      • Robust app ecosystem including web browsers and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
    2. Amazon Fire TV (e.g., Toshiba, Insignia):
      • Strong app support, Alexa integration, and browser availability.
    3. Samsung Tizen OS or LG WebOS:
      • Slightly more versatile than Roku but still limited compared to Android.
