Solved

How do I turn off autoplay on Roku's channel app?

Why is this marked solved when it certainly did not solve the problem?

It will still automatically play the next episode regardless of the Accessibility setting.

Declaring this solved, when it clearly isn't, is a bit misleading.

  • Hi DreamVelvet Frostwolf,

Thank you for posting in the Roku Community!

We understand that you want to turn off Auto Play on the Roku channel, and we are more than willing to help.

Let's see if this will work for you.

Change the Auto-play video setting on your Roku streaming device:

    1. Press Home

      on your remote
    2. Scroll and select Settings
    3. Select Accessibility
    4. Select Auto-play video
    5. Choose On or Off
    6. If you select On, your Roku device will play some videos automatically while you are navigating on the screen
    7. If you select Off, videos will appear as images instead

For more details, please visit our Roku Support article: How to change the auto-play video setting on your Roku streaming device.

As has been said in other threads, that suggestion does not work.

  • I agree it’s BS for sure! I don’t use the Roku channel for this reason. They won’t address the issue because it’s better for their viewing hours and ad revenue. However if their “solution” is in the accessibility settings then it is clearly an #accessibility #ADA issue they are ignoring and getting away with. If I had the energy I’d take it up with Roku but I just prefer to use another channel

Yeah, I figured out what they are calling Auto-play in Accessibility is different than what I’m taking about (and I think you, too). They are talking about where videos will start playing while you’re just navigating the selections on the screen. So I agree they aren’t going to fix it when it provides them ad revenue.

  • Recommend this autoplay feature be called autopreview.  It os for short movie preview feature not playing an episode.

Autoplay should only refer to automatically playing the next episode in a series.

In addition, make autoplay on and off a global feature on roku streaming device and not just a feature that some (buy not all) apps offer.  I don't see any benefit to playing shows that  viewer is sleeping through.  It gives a faulty statistic on shows actually watched, which should drive the industry to produce more highly watched shows NOT highly played to a sleeping audience or the dog shows.

    Just a fee thoughts 🤔.

  • This is NOT SOLVED.

The question is how to stop automatically playing the next episode. Your "solution" doesn't work. I have a Roku Ultra and watching the Roku Channel still plays the next episode automatically.

Hire some coders who can fix this problem in your app, please.

Has anyone had success with preventing Roku Channel from automatically playing one episode after another?

I know people are writing that they generate more revenue by removing this option but the only time I will bother subscribing to a channel through Roku is once a year when they are a dollar or two per month. I keep assuming that the autoplay / auto advance will surely be fixed ffs🤬 but nope.

Another year of Roku losing out on annual subscribers because they don't care enough to address this.

    Hi, tomwhite MWag1

Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community.

We understand your concern regarding turning off the auto-play feature on The Roku Channel, and we're here to help disabling this function on your Roku device.

Use the following steps to change the Auto-play video setting on your Roku streaming device.

    1. Press Home on your remote
    2. Scroll and select Settings
    3. Select Accessibility
    4. Select Auto-play video
    5. Choose On or Off
    6. If you select On, your Roku device will play some videos automatically while you are navigating on screen
    7. If you select Off, videos will appear as images instead
    • Note: If the screen reader is turned on, the auto-play video setting will automatically turn off.

If videos are still automatically playing, review the following troubleshooting tips.

    • Change the setting on each device: The auto-play video settings only applies to the device you are currently using. You must update the setting on each device you own.
    • Check app settings: Roku will make your auto-play preference available to third party apps, but some apps may have their own auto-play setting. If you are in an app, videos still automatically start playing as you navigate, check the app you're in to see whether they have a setting to control auto-play videos.

We hope this works, and let us know if you have further concerns or inquries.

    Best wishes,
    Kash

Hi, thanks, Kadh, but this instruction you posted answers a DIFFERENT auto-play problem and that’s frustrating to have the same terminology used.,Your solution has to do with videos playing while we “navigate” the Roku channel looking for shows.
What WE are complaining about is this (as an example): I’m watching S2/E4 of something on the Roku Channel later in the evening and fall asleep. I wake up and the show is still playing. I eventually make my way back and determine 9 episodes have played!
Please ROKU TECH DEPT let us have a setting option where the device stops after an episode plays and doesn’t play the next episode until the user presses “play next episode.”

      Thank you!
