I have a TCL Roku TV concern

I have a Roku TCL tv which is the biggest POS I've ever owned. Don't bother contacting Roku support because they're no help. And definitely don't waste your time contacting customer service because all they do is blame everything else. Roku is terrible and steadily gets worse every year. I also have the ultra and express streaming players, so far they're not as awful as this pile of TCL junk but I have no doubt it won't be long. Roku is too busy trying to be the moral authority instead of the quality of their products or lack of quality. Another terrible company that's all about the dollar

  • Well, I'm not the OP, but I echo them totally.  I'll kindly provide you more information, because I'm sure you're so, so very, very sorry that I'm having this experience:

Volume is completely uncontrollable. Either blaring, or silent, or both, regardless of what you do.

Shuts down to home screen randomly at least twice a day.

    Locks up randomly

Shuts itself off when it doesn't like an app

That's just the TV.  As for ROKU itself?  Let's talk about that now, shall we?

Doesn't save progress from one TV to the next

    Randomly locks up, shuts down

ROKU uses the address of my router, which, as most routers do, changes its address randomly for security reasons. Instead of knowing this extremely common thing, ROKU bases my content on wherever the router is landing at a particular time.  What's the big deal with that, you ask?  Try watching a local sports game sometime. Or local news. When you live in Chicago, but ROKU has you in Nebraska at 8 am, Michigan at noon, and Virginia by 6.  Cuz, I guess it wouldn't make sense to take the BILLING ZIP CODE and use that as the location.  But then that'd mean somebody'd have to THINK.  And isn't that what AI is for?

...smh. I will NEVER purchase another ROKU tv.  At this point, wtf do I even NEED a tv for anyway? Stupid is right outside the door at any given moment of the day....

...we're all doomed. Y'all know that, right?

    pfft.

  • I think you're saying that your home LAN is connected to a VPN.  (At least, that's my interpretation of: "changes its address randomly".) That is likely to cause confusion and problems with many streaming services.  And in general, I would say the trend is likely to get worse, as more services are using VPN detection services and flat-out refusing to operate if detected.

I can't say that causes all of your issues, since there weren't a lot of a specifics such as model numbers and app names.  Going back to the home screen is generally an app crash.  I had an app that would do that in 2020 - The Shout! app when watching a specific movie would always glitch a few times, in the same spots, and then crash.

Keep in mind that about 99.9% of apps in the channel store are created by other companies (sometimes companies of one guy and he's not even full-time because he has 6 other channels and his day job).  They do vary quite a bit in how much debugging they get. I mostly watch Prime and Netflix which have been solid in my experience.

  • I can confirm TCL/ROKU TV is a steaming pile of feces. Mine is a constant problem getting off the network. This is a common problem verified by literally hundreds on Reddit forum. I'll never buy another from these guys. Put out a **bleep** product and get zero customer loyalty. That's how it goes. Enjoy being a third rate company and forced into bankruptcy.
