This is a feature request with roots in the professional recording studio world.
I would like to suggest a ‘dim’ volume function instead of mute.
If mute is a 100% reduction of sound, dim is a 50-90% reduction in sound (6 to 20 dB in tech terms).
This could be an up to 4-way option in settings that alters the mute button: mute or dim -6, -12, or -18 dB.
This is an elegant way to treat commercial breaks and anything one wants on background. Try it and see how much nicer it can be than a 100% mute!
