I to have been interested in this issue. In my case it's
not bad, just need to learn the "proper" was to encode
the videos. But even with 8 x 1.9Ghz AMD64 opteron
cores, H.264 encoding is perhaps 4 times longer!
Found something bizzare yesterday. Tried another
encode but forcing one Handbrake parameter,
specifically adding "--strict-anamorphic", (with the
CLI version of Handbrake).
That got me very close to proper aspect ratio. It
was still off, streched vertically. It had no black bars
on the left or right, but the top and bottom were too
narrow, (for this wide screen movie). This implies that
Roku might be doing the correct thing but encoders
like Handbrake and it's defaults may not.
When time permits I'll play with it some more, (and
with a shorter video!).
