Stop task when node is no longer available

I have a panel within a panelset that uses a timer to refresh itself.  I can't figure out a way to start this on init() and then stop when the panel has been replaced.

Any ideas?

can you create the timer on init, set to invalid when panel replaced and create new timer when needed?
