I'm not sure how to access the debug console (telnet to port 8085?). The application installs successfully, so I don't think there is a problem with the code syntax, I just don't know how to write it to do what I want it to do.

Yes, telnet to 8085. You're really handicapping yourself if you don't use the debug console.
