Re: Custom Sound Effects
At one time I experimented with what worked and what didn't. Hopefully, if a sound works on one hardware revision, it will work on all of them.
For the record, I've used sounds that were 1-channel 16-bit samples with 8kHz, 11.025kHz, and 22.05kHz sampling rates and as short as 75ms. I don't believe I ever got any 8 bit samples to work.
I'm pretty sure stereo works, although I could be mistaken. I try to keep my sound files that are included in the package as small as possible, so I just use mono and as low a sampling rate as I can get away with.

Unfortunately, that's not been my experience. Sound files that play perfectly on some roku models will not play at all or play very badly on other models. The r3, stick, and XS seem to have the most issues, while the older models seem to do better.
If anyone finds any magic bullets, please share.

Re: Custom Sound Effects
File length matters - I think around 250k is (was?) the maximum file size per sound when I looked into this a long time ago. 8 bit sounds didn't really work on newer devices. There was a bug about certain khz files not playing, not sure if the fix for that was ever integrated into the firmware or not.
