Adding features to existing channel

Hi. I was curious about tinkering with an existing channel to add functionality. (Specifically, I wanted to see if the USB channel — private or official — could be modified to try to get metadata from IMDb or Amazon.) I don't want to start from scratch building a completely new USB channel myself when the existing ones work fine in terms of the features they do have.

What I'm curious about are the rules — both legal and etiquette-wise — of taking someone else's code as a jumping-off point. I don't want to step on any toes or get in any legal trouble. But I'd hate to do the development work and not be able to share it once I'm done. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Re: Adding features to existing channel

I think that's entirely up to the original channel developer. There's no way for you to get the code yourself unless it's open sourced somewhere, so you'd need to have an agreement with the original developer in order to use their codebase to begin with.
