Hey guys, since most (if not all) of you that frequent the developer's forum have some programming/coding experience on other platforms I thought that this would be a good question to ask of you...
I don't have any coding experience under my belt except for using WYSIWYG web designers 10+ years ago when I was in college. Alot has changed since then I know lol. Because of that I haven't been exactly able to "hit the ground running" with the Roku SDK. That's ok though, with the limited understanding I *do* have of BASIC lol I've successfully been able to pin a few things together which I'm happy about. With the help of users here as well, I have figured out ALOT, but now it's just figuring out how to tell the Roku what I want it to do is slowing me down.
Now from what I gather the Roku SDK has similarities to various languages like Java in the use of interfaces and components, and Brightscript itself holds similarities to JavaScript, among others I'm sure. Coming at it with no prior experience in *any* language, reading through the SDK documentation is like trying to read a book on how to learn to speak French that is written in French. Not that that's a bad thing at all, I know the reference material wasn't written to be a tutorial. 🙂
My question is, what language would it be beneficial for one to study on to "fill-in" the basics in order to get a firm enough understanding down to progress with the Roku SDK. I'm thinking maybe JavaScript? but I don't know for sure. I'm asking because I'm curious and interested in learning. 🙂 If I'm way off base in any of my assertions, don't hesitate to let me have it lol. Thanks in advance for informative advice 🙂
