  • Happened to me today. I did not read one suggestion anywhere that fixed the problem. So I problem solved on my own. This worked. I downloaded the roku remote app on my phone. Went into settings on the roku. Then to remotes. Then asked to set up a new remote. Hit "pair " on roku, pressed the button on the remote next to the flashing light. It works now!!!  Hope this helps someone.

I tried all of the suggestions and nothing worked for me. I have a roku stick and I tried switching the HDMI port to a different one and that finally worked! It automatically paired my remote and started working again.

Successful and thank you. Glad I didn’t throw remote away or buy a new.  App also works perfectly

Did you follow this procedure when you tried to re-pair your remote to the Roku?

    1) Remove power from the Roku for a few seconds then plug back in. This will make the Roku receptive to the pairing request from the remote.

    2) Open the remote's battery compartment and bring remote near the Roku . Trying from across the room may not be good enough.

    3) When Roku has booted back up from step 1), press and hold pairing button in remote battery compartment for 3 seconds or more - a quick push won't do it.

    4) LED in battery compartment should start flashing and continue to blink until the pairing is complete.

I’ve tried that already, and the thing is that as soon as i put the batteries in the remote, the green light begins to flash, and it does not pair with my streaming stick. The thing is that i dont know what the green light flashing constantly means.

I believe the flashing light means it is trying to pair.

When I first tried to pair mine again following a factory reset I had the same thing - pressed the pairing button but it just continued to flash. I then found instructions somewhere on the 'net that told me I had to power the Roku down and back up to enable it to react the the remote's pair request. Soon as I did that, it paired without me having to pairing button on the remote.

Getting a new remote will not solve this problem.  It’s a pairing issue and there is not a ‘forget device’ option so by leaving the remote without batteries for a long period of time allowed the remote to forget the TV.  I left mine working will check it out when I get home later and give you feedback.

  • I have tried all the suggestions including working the settings via the app on my smart phone. The green flashing light goes out for a minute or so and then comes back on. Since the Roku3 works using the smart phone app as the remote, I know it is the remote that is the problem and not the Roku box itself. New remote costs almost as much as a new box so not worth the purchase.

Those whose roku's can accept IR remote should switch a cheap IR universal remote, then you'll have working roku with an actual remote instead of cellphone.

Was there ever a resolution to this? I’m having the same issue. I cannot connect to my phone though because I reset my streaming stick thinking that would help now it’s stuck on the language screen !

  • I was having the same exact problem, I followed the instructions multiple times and still the light would just flash. So I put my remote down and started reading through all of these posts and after a few minutes the remote paired itself... while I was reading how to trouble shoot it. So maybe your remote just needs more time to pair

  • I had the similar issue and tried all that was suggested but it didn’t work.  So I removed the batteries and left them off over night (about 7 hours) then when I put the batteries back on the flash green light didn’t come on and remote functioned as if nothing happened.  I didn’t even have to pair it over again it just worked.

  • Changed the batteries in my remote. The pairing light is continuously flashing and the remote isn’t working for the Roku stick. Light won’t stop flashing.

While it flashing unplug the power from the stick for a bit and then plug it back in see if the they connect to each other after awhile.

I had the same problem with my Roku remote. The green light kept flashing and would not stop. The TV would not even turn on. I tried all the recommendations and still would not help. So by accident, I was close to the Roku unit and I accidentally hit the B button on my remote. It WORKED! The green light turned off, the TV came on and am sorry because I do not know how I fixed it. I just know I hit the B button on my remote. I hope this can help someone.

Taking the batteries out works.  I first tried reinstalling in 30 seconds and then a few hours and it didn't work.  Then I just left them out overnight and reinstalled the next day (~10 hours) which worked.

My guess is that the remote had its firmware updated (hence the flashing green light vs no light that would mean the firmware crashed) and to fully install the update, the remote needed to be cold-booted. The overnight thing could be a large capacitor that keeps the remote running so as to save the batteries. You want the remote to be always on so it responds as soon as you pick it up and press a button, hence the capacitor.  The only way to do a cold-boot on the remote is to completely power down its circuitry by leaving the batteries out for an extended period of time.  The amount of time that worked for me was about 10 hours.

I had also previously rebooted (system restart under settings) the Roku unit itself, and performed a cold-boot (unplugging for 30+ seconds) so there is no real way of telling if this played into the working formula.  Perhaps someone else can just do the cold-boot on the remote (taking the batts out overnight) to ascertain the problem is localized to the remote itself.

  • I realize this is an old post but after a lot of frustration and headache, I figured out that the issue won’t be resolved by changing batteries, resetting devices or any other step on this or any other page. The issue is THE WIRELESS RECEIVER POWER CORD. There are no 3rd party cords I can find, but for $20 you can replace it and your headaches will melt away. It’s annoying but cheaper than buying a new device.
