Re: Forced to update and showing error 004
I would like to provide model number, serial number, etc., but I can't access anything after the message ," Can't update software please try again later Error 004" because at this point I have a frozen, static screen. This unit has worked for over a year perfectly until last night (4/04/25.) Can you give me any assistance? Sudden problem with "update failure". Paul dicohic@bresnan.net

Re: Forced to update and showing error 004
Seeing the same thing since last week. Been repowering, then ignoring requests to update until it gives me no choice a day or two later. Repeat. Thought might be running out of memory till saw others having same problem within same time frame.
Model 3930X-Roku Express

Re: Forced to update and showing error 004
Cant get the info because the update prevents the Roku from starting. It is now unusable as the update fails and just leaves a blank screen.

Re: Forced to update and showing error 004
I’m back on. What I did:
Bought new from Walmart Roku Express 4K.
Remove old “receiver” from tv and replace with new.
The self guide starts, the “network password” asked for is the password that is used to log in to your computer.
I think the products have an end which forces a new purchase. I’m able to use my same remote.
This was not a good experience mainly from lack of information from Roku. I’m glad that there is a forum.
Good luck.

Re: Forced to update and showing error 004
My unit is having this problem too, forced update the moment it powers up, gets to 82% then fails with error 004. Then a blank home screen and clock but with no access to anything else.
Randomly, on one hard reboot, I finally managed to get into the main menu, and the system is fully functional for now, but I fear what might happen the next time I reboot.
Details:
Model 3900X - Roku Express
Serial number: redacted since this is a public forum.
Current OS 14.1.4, build 7709
Proposed new OS: 14.5.4, build 5934

Re: Error code 004 for update
It is worse than that -- check my post re: ROKU Ultra playback issues.
ALL ROKU units may spontaneously go to Update which will fail. Error 003, Error 2.34, etc.
I have two units - streamilng stick and an Ultra that are non-functional for over a week.
ROKU engineering knows this. and a trouble ticket is open
When will they provide a strategy to allow an update to an image that is functional.

Error 004 Home Screen Freeze
have a Roku stick. Update screen comes up with no option to do later so I have no choice but to click ok. Goes to about 80% then gives error code. I click try again later and takes me to blank home screen where it freezes. I’ve turned it off and back on a half dozen times with same result. I’ve unplugged stick and replugged with same result
