We did a test with the new remote control unit that came with my new Roku TV. It seems to eliminate this problem. Will Roku send me a replacement remote control device? I had to figure this out myself. We tried all suggestions given here, including removing batteries. Still have same problem with the device that came with the older tv.
Thanks for keeping us posted, @adge.

I had to sign up for a Fandango account and it stopped. Pretty manipulative if you ask me. But this is the world we live in.
I deleted the app with the star key as Instructed on your website. That worked for about 5 minutes, then while watching another app it came back on the screen as and add asking my to browse or subscribe. Ready to buy a Google stick.
Try changing your batteries. I have no clue why or how but that worked. I also read somewhere else that a button may be stuck on the remote causing the app to pop up.
Hi, I just had this problem in 2024. [TLDR, needed to clean the remote] Every time I turned on my Roku TV it would go to Fandango and I could not get out of the page. Even the power button was useless. The buttons seemed to register (the screen would glitch, and I would hear the button press feedback from the speakers) but eventually the TV refused to turn on again after multiple unpluggings. I opened up the remote and realized the batteries had corroded. Opened up the remote more to expose the processing board and saw the battery acid had gotten on the electronics. I washed the board with water and a q tip, let it dry, put it all back together, replaced the batteries, and it worked like a charm.
