That sounds like an issue with the app. Next time it happens, remove the app, then reboot the Roku (this important and must be done while the app is removed), then add the app back.
If the app has some corrupt data, this will clear it out.

For entering text on your roku device you don't have to use the remote. You could use the Roku Mobile App or your computer to do it a lot easier. Channel Keyboard Input is there - https://devtools.web.roku.com/RokuRemote/
