Wake this device but wont work

I have the Roku mobile app and I've been able to use it on my living room tv for almost a year now. Only if I need to use it. But now when I tried to use it, it says to wake this device while my tv is on and it wont connect to it. Does anybody have any idea on why this is?

  • I'm wondering if you've made any progress? I've been having the same trouble. I think it might have something to do with the update.

I was having the same issue. I went into setting>system>restart device. Once I did that I was able to connect with the app again. Hope this helps you.

This was the only thing that worked for me.  Phone and TV in same wifi and same frequency.

Your last response isn't clear. It's as if you were responding to the last post (which was a valid suggestion) but I never saw a response to checking your network. If you're not on the same network, you'll get the very results you're describing. That needs to be ruled out as a possible cause. Re-read my last suggestion and try if, if you haven't. If you have, confirm you're on the same network.

  • I've still been having this exact same issue. My device and tablet are confirmed to be on the same wi-fi network and same frequency, but it's like the app can't seem to  communicate. I also don't have any blocks on my phone or tablet that world prevents communication. Restarting my device does not make any difference. The mobile app used to work just fine.

What's worse is that my actual Roku remote went missing, and just had a brief power outage. The roku lost power, and when rebooting, it did not automatically reconnect to the wifi network. WITHOUT the roku remote, I cannot connect to use the Roku at all.

I'm wondering if your phone is on a different network than the Roku. Many network setups have both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network connection. Some will not allow devices on one to communicate with devices on the other.

Use your actual Roku remote to see what network your Roku is on. Settings > Network > About

    If the channel is above 13, you're on a 5 GHz network. If it's below 14, you're on a 2.4 GHz network.

Then look at your phone. For Android 12 phones, go to Settings > Network & Internet > [your network] > [settings gear] > Frequency.

If it's the same, and your phone app still won't connect, try removing the app from your phone, reboot your phone, then add the app back.

  • I hope we give this thing some buzz it's starting to eat me alive lol

Unplug tv from wall outlet and plug it back in. works for me everytime but it’s a glitch that Roku needs to fix

I was having the same exact issue.  I just went into the Wi-Fi settings and connect to my 2g connection instead of my 5g on my router and it fixed it.  Then I simply logged back into the 5g one and it was still good to go hopefully this works for you also

I found a solution that worked for me. It turned out my phone was connected to my VPN. When I disconnected, the Roku app didn't have any trouble connecting to the TV.

        Thanks for your reply.

I actually don't use a VPN, unless Apple's Private Relay is considered a VPN. But if that were they case, then about hundreds of millions of iphone users will have this same issue!

  • I didn’t have the actual remote so this is what I had to do to resolve this:

    - Power off both wifi and TV (not sure both are necessary but I did both)

    - Turn on TV once Wifi is up ( I was able to power on TV with the Roku app)

    - Go into Settings —> System —> Power —> Enable Fast TV Start

My app remote has worked fine ever since. I did have to restart wifi and TV once more after changing the setting but you might not have to
