    Thanks for the update. I will return the control. 

    Seems like there are issues with

    1) pairing of the remote

    2) no way to unpair the remote from the device.

    Thanks for your time on this, I will return the remote.

It appears that the remote may be experiencing unpairing issues with the device, which could be the reason for the error as it defaults to IR (infrared) mode. We recommend trying a different remote to determine if the issue persists.
