Roku TV stuck on set up language screen and remote won't work

I am in a similar situation with my TCL Roku TV (65r617}.

Originally, WiFi suddenly failed to see any networks. After troubleshooting, I did a factory reset. Now the remote will not operate, other than power. The TV is still stuck on the language selection menu.

I tried to pair the remote with fresh batteries repeatedly.

I suspect that the TV's WiFi receiver has failed, but surprised that the remote can't work via IR for the initial setup.

    Hi lavaristownsray,
Thanks for your first post in the Roku Community!

We appreciate you letting us know about the issue you are experiencing with your Roku remote. We apologized for the inconvenience this has caused.

What type of remote are you using? What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far to try to resolve the issue? If the remote will only control on/off but can't scroll, try resetting the remote: Remove the cover on the back of the remote and long-press the reset button that you will find near the top.

For further insight, please visit our Support page here: How to fix your Roku voice or simple remote that is not working.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

    Best regards,

    Chel

This fixed it for me. Apparently, the factory reset unpairs the remote with the TV, but the IR function (which controls on/off) still works.

I have tried all the suggestions here and nothing has worked. I have a roku premier device set up on my Samsung smart tv., I’ve had the roku device approximately 2-3 years and have never had an issue. It was stuck on the screen saver so I did the reset on the device, I’ve also unplugged it- both of these things several times and it’s still stuck on the “Let’s get started” language screen.

  • I am having the same trouble. Did you figure out how to fix this?

Psyrog , if your tv isn't responding to the remote, you can view the front of your remote through a cell phone camera to see if the IR is actually luminating. (For some reason you can see that through a phone's camera.).

That would clarify if the remote's not working, or the tv's sensor failed.

Or, are you saying you have (or had) a wifi problem? Are you stuck on a setup-language screen? How/why did you get there?

There is a factory-reset pinhole button on the back of the tv. Your tv's manual will explain how to use it (google your tv model to find the manual). I'm sure there are videos showing how to do it, probably applicable to all models.

Which kind of remote do you have? If you have the remote with the voice control. Hold the back arrow and home button at the same time. You’ll see a green light flashing on the remote on the TV screen, an icon with a remote will load up on the TV and it should pair.

  • I had this same problem. I could not get passed the language selection page. I tried unplugging the TV and doing a full reset to no avail. I remembered I had another WiFi Roku remote. So, I got that, and was able to complete the setup. The problem for me was a bad remote Roku remote.

My voice remote was draining the battery so I did a factory reset. Now I can't control the Roku Express with my phone app or the remote. It is stuck on the language selection screen. Is there any way to address this?

TiJo, did you pair the remote again?  If it has a pairing button on the back or inside the battery compartment, press and hold it until the light on the remote starts flashing.  If it doesn't, press and hold the Back and Home buttons at the same time.  Once the light is flashing, connect the power to the Express.

OK so what if you lost your remote before setting up your TV. I can't get past language screen cuz I have no remote and I don't have WiFi at the moment?  Any ideas?

monicabush7267, it doesn't matter whether you have Wi-Fi or not.  You need a physical remote to set up a TV.  You can get a voice remote at Target, Walmart, or Best buy, find a universal remote that supports your TV, or contact the TV's manufacturer which most likely isn't Roku.

  • I literally just bought a brand new roku express & it won't do anything except show language option It won't let me do any start up I checked batteries, did reset ect and nothing still
