Mute/sound icon stays on screen all the time and will not go away even though it’s not muted

On the bottom left side of the screen, the mute icon stays on the screen to let us know that the TV is not muted. It will not go away until we click mute. We just wanna be able to watch something without that Icon on the bottom with the sound on. We’ve tried restarting it. 
We are using a 4 k stick on a non smart tv. We’ve used different Rokus and never had this issue since they never controlled the volume on screen

    You don’t mention your specific model of TV, but on TVs I have seen, the mute icon indicates that the TV is muted.  What produces the sound in your configuration?  I’m guessing your have an AVR, sound bar, or audio receiver, making the actual sound???
