Motion Smoothing out of nowhere

As of this morning, my TCL Roku TV randomly has motion smoothing. There is no setting to turn it off. I’ve had this tv for a couple years and this hasn’t been an issue. What can I do about this?

Model Number: G140X

Software Version 13.0.0.24062

  • Hi, Community users!

Thanks for keeping us posted on this issue.

It seems like you're noticing a reduction in judder, which occurs when content has fewer frames than what can be displayed on a TV. As a result, motions such as panning or zooming may not appear to be smooth, but just to clarify, this isn't motion smoothing. If you want to understand more about this, you can learn more here: How Roku reduces judder on TVs

In the meantime, kindly confirm if you can see an option where you can disable this.

Note: We'll mark this post as a solution for everyone's visibility.

Your continuous patience and understanding are highly appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Carly

  • Motion smoothing is stuck on on all apps, with no option to turn it off within picture settings -> expert settings. Tried customer support who were unable to help

  • I have the same problem. TCL, model number G107X, software version 13.0.0. Had it for years and hasn't been an issue since yesterday. I don't see any options mentioning "action smoothing" in any of the menus when I click * while video is playing. Extremely frustrating, but it's interesting to see that it has happened to multiple people simultaneously.

      Hi, Community users!

      Greetings from the Roku Community.

Thank you for reporting this matter to us. Rest assured that we will coordinate this with the appropriate team for further investigation.

Kindly provide us with the following details so we can report this effectively:

      • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and OS version. (this can all be found in Settings > System > About)
      • Tracker ID (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times, and provide us with this ID)
      • Did this happen even before the software version 13?
      • A short video clip or photo of it happening.

In the meantime, you may disable this by pressing the star (*) button on your remote during playback > Picture Settings > Advance Picture Settings > Action Smoothing.

We'll be looking forward to your response.

      Best regards,
      Carly

  • Created an account just to complain about this. Just unboxed and mounted a brand new Roku TV and now I can't even change a basic setting?! I get pretty bad headaches with motion smoothing on so this TV is useless to me until it's fixed.

      Juswhi926,

Return it & get a Samsung or a Sony or an LG, ANYTHING WITHOUT THE ROKU OS!

  • Posting again because every post previous has been incorrectly marked solved, even thought it is no way solved. My TV for MONTHS now has had motion smoothing stuck on, with no way to be turned off. We as consumers are constantly told it is being worked on, or are told it is our fault, with no solution when we are asking for the most simple level of control of the TVs we purchased. I know there will be no solution, but i hope that the company will understand the frustration of the issue and its lack of concern for fixing the issue. I will be purchasing a non-roku TV as quickly as i can from a brand that respects its consumers in any way shape or form.

  • Roku was my go-to smart TV. It is what I buy Everytime I need a new TV. But recent updates like motion smoothing and whatever they did that make all my shows now look like soap operas have completely turned me off. So now I am turning Roku off and replacing all of my Roku TVs with other devices. Another good company gone bad.

SINCE THIS IS A DELIBERATE UPDATE (NOT A TECHNICAL ISSUE) BY ROKU WTF DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHAT MODEL OUR TV'S ARE??? THIS IS JUST A STEAMROLL OVER THE CUSTOMER ONCE AGAIN!!! WE SHOULD HAVE THE OPTION OF TURNING OFF THIS 'UPDATE'!! DOES IT MAKE ROKU HAPPY WHEN THEY PISS OFF THEIR CUSTOMERS?

  • Hello Roku Team -

This issue is not resolved as the motion blur, motion smoothing, action smoothing, jitter reduction, whatever-you-call-it is still enabled and there is no menu option to disable it.

Should I return my TV and get a different brand? Or will this error be fixed?

I ordered a TCL Google TV. I'll be sending back this useless Roku as soon as the replacement arrives.

I'm pretty sad to be moving away from Roku. I've been using Roku for many years with zero problems - but one idiotic design decision and it comes to an end.
